    Home!
I'm home from Costa Rica... minus a cell phone. I'll post pictures and such as soon as Jen, Nicole, Lindsay and I get them all together and remove the bad ones.

In the meantime, can I get everyone's numbers again? Just email them to squeezer at g mail dot com if you don't mind.

    Ciao!

    Exciting times ahead and behind
After the worst month of work on record, I'm currently packing for a 2-week trip to Costa Rica. We fly out tomorrow (Thursday) at 5:00am, meaning we have to leave for the airport around 2:30am.... 4 hours from now or so. So, if I'm out of contact with anyone for a few weeks, that's why.

Hey Tim, are you anywhere near Houston? We have a few hours of a layover on our way to and from...

    In other news
Has anyone else noticed that Stevie Ray Vaughan could probably compete for the title of ugliest musician ever? I just watched the 1 hour special of his best performances, and besides being suitably impressed by his playing.... damn that's one ugly guy.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

    Dock workers on strike
Since no one seems to be reporting this besides the LA times, I thought I would pass this article along.

Thousands of West Coast Dock Workers on Strike to Protest Iraq War

Pretty crazy. I hope this doesn't impact prices :-/

    My cat is brilliant
For those of you who don't know, Jen and I got a kitten a few months back. In what has proven to be a supreme irony, we named him Darwin. Unfortunately, I think he may be a couple tacos short of a combo.

Darwin likes hanging out in the bathroom, and loves trying to pounce on drops of water that fall from the shower after use. So, it's very normal to get out to dry myself off, only to find Darwin waiting to jump into the bathtub. This morning, I was in the shower and Darwin hopped up onto the edge, between the shower curtain and the cloth cover that faces outward. He was particularly interested in a piece of lint that was being pushed around by the water, and started leaning over to bat at it. Finally, his curiosity got the best of him, and he jumped into the shower to pounce, only to realize that he had landed in front of the shower stream.

He started running around in circles, which only served to get him wetter. Next, he jumped at the curtain, only to slide right back into the bathtub. Worried that me might try climbing up my leg, I opened the curtain a bit, allowing him to jump out.

When I got out of the shower, I saw a very unhappy looking, dripping wet cat giving himself a bath in the corner of the room.

I'm curious to see if he learns from his mistakes.

    Life goes on
My grandmother, Eva Reis, passed away on Wednesday. She was nearly 90, and her health had been in decline for awhile. So for the last few days, I have been in Cleveland, OH (after the craziest night of flying I've ever experienced) with my family. The service and burial, conducted in the orthodox Jewish tradition, were Friday afternoon, and afterward we all congregated at my uncle's house and told stories and reminisced about our experiences with her while sitting shiva (aka, mourning). Traditionally, this lasts a week, during which friends and community members come by and offer condolences to the family, as well as paying their respects to the deceased. They also bring food. (A lot of it. I had 7 meals today, and that's no exaggeration.) However, we decided that we would shorten the process to three days instead of seven, largely because we know grandma would never, ever want to "inconvenience" us like this for a whole week.

During this process, I learned a lot more about my grandmother's history (and my mom's and uncles' childhoods), and I think the whole experience was very therapeutic.

Read on if you're interested... )

In any case, I will post more about this later.

How to make a web update in my office (aka playing telephone)
    1) The user contacts their supervisor and says “X, Y and Z need to be changed on our website”
    2) The supervisor contacts our help desk and says "X Y and Z need to be changed."
    3) We contact Alice, director of payroll, saying "Our user says X Y and Z need to be changed."
    4) Alice contacts James, her web designer who lives in Oklahoma at the moment and says "X, Y and Z need to be changed."
    5) James makes the changes
    6) James emails Alice and asks if everything looks alright
    7) Alice emails us and asks if everything looks alright.
    8) We email the supervisor and ask if everything looks alright.
    9) The supervisor emails the user and asks if everything looks alright
    10) Profit!

(note: I used to do web design as 25% of my job description at my previous position)
(note: we have in-house web design software that makes this whole process as easy as editing a Word document, effectively rendering James, Alice, and our help desk obsolete once the help desk or James has set up the initial page)

Now some of you might ask "why don't the users, or their supervisors, just email James and ask?" You see, my life is OFFICE SPACE, and this is analagous to the guy who says that he has PEOPLE SKILLS.

    Someone kill me please.

    Gary Gygax dead
For anyone who played D&D or AD&D when they were younger, or who still plays it, you will doubtlessly be saddened to hear that Gary Gygax just passed away.

I still have my first and second edition books. This kind of makes me want to pull them out and read through again.

    Steampunk Mac Mini?
Apparently the artist did this for his wife as a wedding present. The end result is really cool!

    I got Rick Rolled
That's really all I have to say -- I was reading Digg and clicked on one of the links. I listened to a good 2 minutes of the song in utter shame.

I guess this makes me a bad person. :(

I'm not sure what to say about this one

Goth who walks fiancée on a leash is banned by bus driver who told him: 'No dogs allowed'

In other news, I saw Sweeney Todd this weekend and loved it. I haven't seen the original musical, but I thought the movie was well done, and the singing was surprisingly good. It was a bit gory with all the necks getting slashed and the bodies falling down chutes and such, just to caution anyone who wants to see it...
